GNSS disturbances affecting Finnmarksløpet’s GPS tracking

GNSS disturbances (GPS) have been recorded over several years in East Finnmark and areas near the border. These disturbances can occur as jamming or spoofing. Jamming means that GNSS signals cannot be received or transmitted by the GPS device. Spoofing causes the GPS to show an incorrect position.

This can affect both transmitters and receivers. The police and Finnmarksløpet therefore maintain close communication about the situation during the race.

“We have a good dialogue with Finnmarksløpet regarding the safety of the participants. At the same time, we unfortunately experience that GNSS disturbances occur in the area,” says Chief of Staff at Finnmark Police District, Tarjei Sirma-Tellefsen.

The trail in the area is well marked, and participants are encouraged to carry a map and compass as an alternative means of navigation. Finnmarksløpet emphasizes that the safety of both dogs and participants is well safeguarded.

Managing Director of Finnmarksløpet, Svanhild Pedersen, regrets that this affects our GPS tracking but stresses that these are external factors beyond our control and not a system error on the part of our provider.
