About the respiratory infection in 2026

Information from RaceVets and Finnmarksløpet regarding the respiratory outbreak during Finnmarksløpet 2026

In the lead-up to and during Finnmarksløpet 2026, respiratory symptoms were observed in some dogs. Test results obtained afterward confirmed the presence of canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV), with no detection of other relevant respiratory viruses or bacteria in the samples analyzed.

RaceVets and Finnmarksløpet emphasize that the situation was closely monitored before, during, and after the race. Strict infection control measures were implemented prior to the start, including quarantine rules, enhanced veterinary checks, and clear communication to the mushers. Dogs showing symptoms, suspected infection, or relevant exposure were not allowed to participate.

The assessment before and during the race was that the situation could be managed responsibly within the framework of the event, and that animal welfare was safeguarded. At the same time, RaceVets and Finnmarksløpet acknowledge that the outbreak was serious in nature and that the situation provides important lessons.

After the race, affected dogs have been followed up, and assistance has been offered to mushers, including treatment plans for the dogs. Information from RaceVets’ own samples and samples taken by participants is consistent and supports the assessment that the outbreak was primarily caused by CRCoV.

Animal welfare has been the top priority throughout the entire process, and this remains an ongoing effort. RaceVets and Finnmarksløpet welcome an open and constructive dialogue with race participants regarding the handling of the situation, and will use the experiences from this year’s race to evaluate improvements in routines, communication, and procedures for future outbreaks.
