New Class Fills Up in Record Time

Interest in Finnmarksløpet 2027 has been exceptionally strong since Early Bird registration opened on August 15. The new FL-300 class is already fully booked with 40 participants, just three days after registration opened.

«We are incredibly pleased and excited about the level of interest we are seeing. The fact that FL-300 filled up in just three days shows that this is an opportunity many mushers have been waiting for,» says Martin Pedersen, Managing Director of Finnmarksløpet.

Interest is also strong in the other race classes. So far, 28 mushers have registered for FL-600, which bodes well for participation in Finnmarksløpet 2027. At this time of year, most mushers are only just beginning their training and preparations for the winter season, and Finnmarksløpet therefore expects registration numbers to continue growing throughout the autumn.

Considering an Expansion of the Participant Field

FL-300 is a new race class developed to make Finnmarksløpet accessible to more mushers. Competitors race with up to eight dogs, and the distance and format were developed in collaboration with Alta Trekkhundklubb.

The goal has been to lower the threshold for entering Finnmarksløpet while still giving participants the opportunity to experience the authentic Arctic wilderness for which the Finnmark Plateau is renowned.

Following the overwhelming response, Finnmarksløpet has now opened a waiting list.

«Due to the strong interest, we will assess whether it is practically possible to expand the field by a small number of participants. We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to take part, while maintaining the quality, logistics and safety of the event. If we determine that additional starting positions can be offered, those on the waiting list will be given priority and will be first in line,» says Pedersen.

Meeting a Need Within the Sport

FL-300 represents a new initiative for Finnmarksløpet and has been designed for both first-time long-distance mushers and more experienced competitors who are looking for a shorter race format.

The rapid sell-out suggests that the class is meeting a clear demand within the sport.

«The response we have received so far gives us great confidence in this initiative. We look forward to welcoming both new and experienced mushers to Alta for Finnmarksløpet 2027,» says Pedersen.
